What is integrated systems testing (IST) and why is it the most important commissioning phase?
Integrated Systems Testing (IST) — also called Level 3 commissioning — tests the interactions between all facility subsystems under simulated failure conditions. IST reveals integration issues that component-level testing cannot find — for example, a generator that starts correctly in isolation but fails to pick up load when the ATS transfers, or a cooling system that doesn't respond correctly when a CRAC unit fails. What is a factory acceptance test (FAT) and when is it performed?
A Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) is performed at the equipment manufacturer's facility before shipment to verify the equipment meets specifications. For UPS systems, FAT includes full-load testing, efficiency measurement, battery discharge testing, and transfer switch operation. For generators, FAT includes load bank testing at rated capacity, governor response testing, and protective relay calibration. FAT reduces the risk of discovering defects after equipment is installed in the facility, when remediation is much more expensive.
